Bob Rees: From Heartbreak to Adventure

Family Life

Bob and his wife Chris raised two daughters, Alex and Katrina, now proud grandparents to four grandchildren. Their early years together featured camping and 4WD adventures, but motorcycles were always their true passion.

The Accident

In July 2019, during their second motorcycle journey through Africa, tragedy struck in Northern Malawi when a car collided with them on a narrow bridge. After a five-hour journey to find medical help, Chris passed away in Bob's arms, telling him it had been "the best 47 years she could have had." Bob survived with a broken back, eventually returning to Australia after months in hospitals across three countries.

Music & Advocacy

During recovery, Bob began writing songs about his experience, eventually recording "Bob Rees: The Journey" with top Perth musicians. His advocacy work for disability access in Albany earned him the Community Senior Citizen of the Year award.

Back on the Road

Working with skilled engineers, Bob modified a Harley Davidson with a sidecar to accommodate his wheelchair. At 75, he completed a solo four-month journey through the UK, Isle of Man and Europe, followed by a 5,500km ride across Australia. "People opened up to me about their problems and trauma," Bob says. "Inadvertently I was helping people throughout my trip. And they helped me too."

North American Adventure

Bob is now preparing for his most ambitious ride yet—a five-month journey across North America starting in Vancouver. Despite the challenges of traveling as a paraplegic, Bob’s faith in humanity remains unshaken.

“From my experiences, I believe 99% of people are genuine, honest, friendly, and helpful.”

“Even though you’re no longer young, don’t give up but live life to the full. Make it fulfilling, satisfying, and worthwhile no matter what.” – Bob Rees
